Inculsive and Cultural Self-Assessment

Inclusive and Cultural Self-Assessment

Cultural Competence is an important aspect when working in the schools. Respectful, inclusive, and responsive teachers who are committed to their students and their own continuous learning are key to increase cultural competence.

 The Four Dimensions
 -Cultural Knowledge
-Cultural Awareness
-Cultural Sensitivity
-Cultural Action

As a future school counselor I feel it is very important for myself and others who work in the school system to work towards really getting to know their students at the school by taking action in learning their own cultural background as well in order to see their students through a new lens as well.

In the future I plan on having activities and guidance lessons to work with the students and teachers to teach each other about where we all come from and cultural customs that may be important to different families. I believe it is important to be open minded when it comes to meeting new people and working with new students and families.

Another point to make is that ones culture is not just about where they come from or their family originated from, it is also about the traditions and customs. It may even be about what is important to them and how they identify.
