Teachers Can be Effective and Yet Not Just Alike

Personal Attributes and Professional Skills, Attributes, and Abilities

I am goal driven, organized, and willing to help others. I enjoy reading and learning new things. I try to look at all aspects of a situation when having to make an educated decision. I do well working with others and enjoy collaborating ideas. As a future school counselor I plan on using all these attributes in my work environment to help create the best environment for facilitating learning and making it a safe place for students to come.

I believe the personal qualities I behold, have molded me into the counselor I am today and the school counselor I will become. I work hard for others and really believe in team work. It takes a village to raise a child, and I hope to be a large contribute to all the little villages for each student. When working with students it is important to encourage them to ask for help. Creating a safe school environment is very important to me, especially so that students know they are not alone.

Module 2

My Core Convictions about Teaching and Learning

I believe being an educator is the most prestigious

profession. Without teachers there would be no lawyers, doctors, nurses, counselors, biologists, etc. Teachers are the beginning of everyone's education.

Although I am going into the counseling aspect of the school community, I plan on being a support for the teachers and additional staff at my school. I plan on working together with my fellow staff to ensure that all students are getting the most out of their education; academically, socially, and personally.

I do believe teachers make all the difference in learning. Teaching does look easy from the outside, but if you look back to all the man hours they put in outside of the classroom you would think otherwise. Teachers are not only educators, they are advocates, instructors, observers, evaluators, and coaches.

My Goals as an Educator (School Counselor)

To be the best support staff. As a School Counselor I am not only the advocate for my students, but I will be for my teachers and additional staff.

Supporting the teacher and working collaboratively with them will ensure that all students are getting the most out of their education.

I want to be able to align guidance lessons with what the students are learning in the classroom, bridging the gap between what is going on with them socially and personally with their academics as well.

Inculsive and Cultural Self-Assessment

Inclusive and Cultural Self-Assessment

Cultural Competence is an important aspect when working in the schools. Respectful, inclusive, and responsive teachers who are committed to their students and their own continuous learning are key to increase cultural competence.

 The Four Dimensions
 -Cultural Knowledge
-Cultural Awareness
-Cultural Sensitivity
-Cultural Action

As a future school counselor I feel it is very important for myself and others who work in the school system to work towards really getting to know their students at the school by taking action in learning their own cultural background as well in order to see their students through a new lens as well.

In the future I plan on having activities and guidance lessons to work with the students and teachers to teach each other about where we all come from and cultural customs that may be important to different families. I believe it is important to be open minded when it comes to meeting new people and working with new students and families.

Another point to make is that ones culture is not just about where they come from or their family originated from, it is also about the traditions and customs. It may even be about what is important to them and how they identify.
